Physical DLC Thread [Toys-To-Life. amiibo, etc.]
I got my Chibi Robo pack with the Amiibo today.

It's sooo cute. It's one of my favorites now.

I hate when they go Toys R Us exclusive. The closest one is two hours away, they aren't doing online releases anymore and they mark up the price on everything.

Oops massive bump, but uhhhhhhhh things have long changed in the amiibo scene. But figured I'd post as it's relevant but I'm a bit late on this, sorry - it was just announced today!

Tomorrow, the Roy amiibo (y'know, Fire Emblem man) goes up for preorder in-store at Gamestops nationwide at 2PM CST (3PM EST and 12PM PST?) and there's no store allocation limits anymore...because they're apparently finally catching up with demand.

He's exclusive to Gamestop and the figure is on sale March 18 but yeah

I agree. It's also surprisingly heavy.

I'm super excited for the Kirby line they just announced. I'll probably get most of those.

I'll get at least one of them. Probably Meta Knight. I want at least one of each line of amiibo, so I'll get the Wolf Link amiibo eventually, when it's sold separately. I already pre-ordered Starfox Zero and Pokken and I'm not that interested in Twilight Princess HD. I have the Wii version that I've yet to boot.
Series I got at least one of so far:
Super Smash Bros. (got 27)
Super Mario (got 6, including Silver Mario)
Splatoon (all 3)
Shovel Knight
Chibi Robo (don't have Ziplash and never will)
Animal Crossing (Tom Nook, was on sale)
Animal Crossing card (I count it all as one series; got 6, I think and the series 1 album)
Yoshi's Wooly World (Mega Yarn Yoshi)
Mario 30th anniversary (Classic colors)

I just got a Ryu amiibo. I tested it in Super Mario Maker and... not compatible.
I understand that he's a 3rd party character, but I was hoping for a Ryu costume after the reveal that Wolf Link is compatible.
You know what'd be awesome? If the Ryu amiibo, being a Capcom character and all, was compatible with the 3DS Megaman Anniversary collection and unlocked Hadouken and Shoryuken as weapons in certain modes or every game or whatever, like the secret upgrade in Mega Man X. Of course that's highly unlikely.

RIP Disney Infinity, come this June :/

Makes me wonder how Nintendo's doing with their amiibos...I was thinking of picking up the squid sisters just as collectables.

I think Nintendo has an advantage in this regard. Disney Infinity is just a few specific titles with figurines designed specifically for it and nothing else. Basically if they wanted their collectables to stay relevant, they had to keep creating new games specifically for them.

Nintendo's advantage is that their figurines are not necessarily game specific, and can be used over and over again over a variety of franchises. Basically, they don't have to spend money making games for Amiibo, because the games are getting made regardless of the existance of the figurines. All they have to do to keep Amiibo relevant is continue to add functionality to games that were already going to get made anyways.

Essentially, putting Amiibo functionality in games costs them extremely little because they're just adding a small bit of data to a product that was already going to exist regardless.

Disney Infinity also tried way too hard to be Project Spark and limited which characters could explore which worlds, kind of killing the whole "Infinity" thing. The lack of a focus on the Playset story assets made the game feel void and directionless half the time. This without geting into how much it chugged on some consoles. It suffered from using only partial character casts (Phineas, Agent P, but no Ferb?) and by not creating enough characters to appeal to Disney fans as opposed to characters designed for marketing. The characters who were made to suit Disney fans tastes ended up being only usable within the overworld or custom worlds, which were largely poorly made and not much fun.

It had a lot of cool ideas that needed to be fleshed out. I love thinking about it, and I love where it could have gone... and I think cutting the franchise without at least trying to save it by experimenting a little bit is short sighted.
