This is one of the most bizarre and frustrating things I read in this topic. That logic is so alien. You got interested in Diddy because he was top tier? What?! To me, in my mind, that's not a good reason to like a character. By that I mean, the actual character Diddy Kong himself, not the fighter.

i never said i got interested in him because he was top tier. i got interested because he was just popular at that time for being top tier and i never really paid attention to him in the roster. there are many characters like that for me, such as lucario, duck hunt, olimar, etc.

i dont see how there has to be logic for that sort of thing, shallow or not. a character was brought to my eyes, and i thought, "hey, diddy kong was in since brawl and ive never really played a game in his series. why not change that?" i never even mained diddy kong until AFTER i played his game, so its nothing about him being powerful or anything.

Oh I see. I misunderstood.

A lot of the pictures of her seem to be the same face in a mildly different pose.

Her personality truly is in her dialogue. But her website has little mangas showing her more expressive.

If you want to know more about the character read my post about her in the fantasy Smash thread.

They're both good NES games in a similar dungeon-romping game style as Zelda.  They're linear experiences, though.  Mike Jones used a YoYo in the first game, which is upgraded as the game goes on.  He's probably one of the earliest video game examples of a yoyo-bashing protagonist.

I think we can rule out the "too similar" bit considering there are literally 2 marios, 2 marths, and 2 pits.

The main problem is that there is a very, VERY strong similarity to Ness going on here with psychic powers, a modern day character thrust into a plot revolving around mind-controlling aliens, usage of both Yo-yos and bats as weapons, etc. The problem is that the average gamer is going to approach a character like this and write it off as a character very similar to Ness and to Lucas,

What I was also saying is that the differences lie in certain applications of the character. For example, Mike is extremely sporty. His powerful moves revolve around being able to pitch well (He's an Ace Pitcher), and he uses items like baseball bats for swinging and sports shoes for kicking. However, he also gets access to more ancient weaponry like a morning star that functions basically like his Yoyo, and in the second  game he gets access to things like stone axes, katanas and items such as that for throwing.

Basically, there CAN be a way to make Mike a good character (my suggestion is always to have his item throwing be a super powerful ability), but in the mainstream eye he is going to be washed up by the popularity of Ness and Lucas, a franchise that is already more or less a niche in Nintendo series.

Which is too bad, because Mike was actually first, lol. They could've at least made him a trophy :C.

Ace Pitcher makes him sound like a Pokemon Trainer, lol. "You are challenged by Ace Pitcher Mike Jones!"
This would be his VS Portrait.

Unfortunately for Mike Jones, being from an American only game means you pretty much don't exist in this Japan centric series.

First big Smash 4 tournament of 2016, and I placed T13. I think I had an easy bracket, because I was rusty as hell. I used my main Yoshi, but I also used a lot of Cloud- the latter actually won me a match against this Rosalina main who just didn't like Cloud at all.

Definitely need to use more Cloud, he's got great setups. His Limits are fun as hell to use.

um, you sound like you're just flamebaiting right now ):

Punch-Out in Japan was an extremely rare game (10,000 copies total) because it was a prize for winning the NES Golf tournament in 1987 (and it was gold! actually, 1,000 were given as prizes and the majority of the rest were raffled off, I think), and still didn't sell that well in Japan even after the Mike Tyson version was released there.
Meanwhile it did gangbusters in the States.

Who in Japan actually wanted Little Mac in Smash Bros. considering the game barely even sold? Hell he was from a special edition game so it COULDN'T be sold. He was pretty much a character that only American players enjoyed.

?? Big Grin ??

oh yeah. he was a pick purely to appeal to american audiences. and to be fair, so is Cloud (believe it or not!) but that one's a little harder to argue since FF7 did OK in Japan too

I mean, with that in mind Mike Jones technically has a chance, he's just probably waaaaaaaaaaay too obscure (like Sukapon) to currently be featured in the game.

Little Mac also appeared in the Japan only Captain Rainbow. Japan seems to be aware of his existence.

Now here something interesting. Sakurai was in charge of Kid Icarus: Uprising. If you listened to his interviews or played his game you'd realize that Sakurai either didn't know there was an American only sequel to Kid Icarus or he is just pretending it never happened.

Honestly, I think Sakurai didn't even realize that there was a sequel to Kid Icarus on the Gameboy. It wouldn't surprise me.

So if he didn't know there was a sequel to Kid Icarus even though he was in charge of making a new Kid Icarus game, do you honestly believe he would have the faintest idea of what StarTropics is? I don't think so.

Reminds me of that one article about Japanese players' reactions to Little Mac's announcement.

Actually, some of those posts look kinda familiar...

Basically the same as this thread. Character announced.
-People parroting each other.
-All Caps or Exclamation marks everywhere.
-Hasty Generalization fallacy (i.e. no one knows who this is, despite them clearly acknowledging its popularity outside Japan).

Wait, did Japan not get the SNES or Wii Punch-Out games? Shouldn't they at least know Mac from that?
