I need some feedback for my spritesheet

Question 
I decided today that I was going to make a spritesheet for the spriters-resource, but it got rejected only seconds after I put it up for reviewing. This was expected as I am new to spriting. What I really want is for some feedback because I only saw a couple of things wrong. Also just to add I run on a very old mac so I don't use very good software, actually I use the website Piskel for editing, so not very good.

Don't be afraid to speak your mind, don't worry I won't take it harshly or anything. Tongue

It was meant to be smb1 shy guys

ARRRRIGHT!

1.SMB on the NES isn't just flat colors, sure the sprites lack outlines but they have greater definition than just colored blobs, NES sprites are capable of 4 colors including transparency so you could effectively use that to define the belt, arms, mask, and hood fold.

2. These appear to be SMB2 sprites just with all the shades filled in, I suggest you take a look at the Mario Customs already on the site, for as you can see, have original sprites that look nearly to fully official, if TSR accepted all sprites, then we would have 10 second MS paint drawings of Mario all over the site.

3.slow down with the posts, nobody likes a user who runs in saying "WOW! FANTASTIC!" Then leaves... We've had users like these and they mostly turn out to be just building a post count so they can request stuff, which is very frowned upon around here

Pretty much what Hiynastrike said. If you want an example of how to convert a sprite from one style to the SMB1 style, simply look at Super Mario Maker and their Chain Chomps.

The SMB3 has more details than in SMB1, but at the same time they did more than remove colors. Since the SMB1 style is more flat (everyone is either straight toward the player or the screen), they made the Chain Chomp look like he would fit in the original game. They still have less colors and no outlines, but you can still see the details. 

Your Shyguys don't show off that detail level. In fact, the way you recolored them made them lose detail. You removed their arms. You should instead try to edit the Super Mario Maker Bob-ombs and use them to make the Shyguys. Or do what I did and base them off Goombas.

Just to mention, yes I appreciate your feedback and I do understand. However I am new to the forum and everything in general, so I need a lot of help. Just for the record I do do my research, and from searching the internet before I made this and checking on different websites I was almost certain you could only use 3 colours unless using the mega man affect which is two sprites layered, just mentioning not trying to be rude.

Just for the record I don't use MS paint, im on a mac. Not to say I would if I had a windows computer because it would not work.

Thanks that was really helpful, if you could just keep an eye out because im going to try again and make it more accurate, also great job on the shy guy you did it looks awesome.

Here we go I took your advise and spent some time perfecting it, but the walking doesn't look so good, can you see the reason because I couldn't tell.

Personally I think it looks a lot better.

I can see why the Walking doesn't look good: it doesn't give off the illusion to it walking. Look at the original Goomba sprite. To give the illusion of walking, one foot is bigger (indicating it is the forward foot) and the other foot is smaller (being in the background). By simply flipping the sprites, you created an illusion of walking because the face is always in the same position when you flip it.

Your Shyguy has his arms in a similar position and his face slightly to one side. Flipping it just flips it. Since he is wearing a cloth, you need to have the arms be the indication that he's moving, not his face. Compare your Shyguy with mine and you can see a difference.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it, il make it more obvious that his arms are moving and leave his face stationary.

Update: There we go, animation still looks a bit funny but it works quite a lot better. 

   

Just ignore the glitchy gif part, dunno what happened to it

It still the arms. I've animated your Shyguy sprites and mine so you can see the issue.

Your pixels remain the same, but simply switch places. That makes it seem like they're dancing than moving forward. My version have the pixels looking different trying to give the illusion that the arms are in different positions. I definitely could have improved it by moving a few pixels but the idea is there. A better look is this.

True. But in SMB the Goombas only have 2 frames.

K also the reason it doesn't have any strap is because the gif I accidentally made rolled it back a little bit before I re-added the straps
