I think the tree guy would look far more interesting if his face almost looked as if it was just stuck to a log, with roots popping up under his features and twigs/foliage popping out of his nose or something.

I agree with that, but I would think foliage hair would be cool, because remember, he's turning into a tree and the top could have branches with leaves on. I suggest you blend the skin and bark more, like an intermediate type of skin (half human half tree).
The "normal" guy's neck shadow is troubling me.
Apart from that, these are good works!

Maybe get rid of the leaves poking out on top of his hair (I think you didn't grasp what I meant).
I suggest you get rid of that branch on the top of his head, put some leaves as if it were his hair, and try and make the beard blend more with the bark (the face and bark blending's good though).

I can't do that because I would have to go back and change the sprites of him that I already have and some other pixel art (well more so than I already have to do).
I prefer the version I have now. Unless there is any other critique that wouldn't change up his whole design, I'm considering this done.

EDIT: but yeah...for some reason the hazel eyes seem to not go well with the whole tree thing. unless his eyes have to be hazel, i would have made them either green or brownish or something. perhaps its just me. ;P
