Guild Wars 2

Hey everyone! Recently, Dazz and I started playing Guild Wars 2 again. With the realization that the base game is now completely free to play, we convinced a few friends to join, created a VG Resource guild, and have been having a blast. If anyone already plays or is interested in playing, you can join us in the Americas region on the Sorrow's Furnace server. Just add Petie.3250 or Dazz.1729 and message us for an invite to the guild!

If you don't already have the game, you can create an account and download the client from https://www.guildwars2.com. If you have any questions, let just know here and we'll do our best to help you out. Hopefully we'll see some of you guys there!

I haven't played GW2 for a while and I only have an outdated gw2.dat file for data mining remaining from it but I think I'll download the game again to join the guild and start a new character.

Sounds good! When you (or anyone else who intends to join us) get back on, be sure to post your name (the one with the four digit number after it, visible in your friends list) here so we can add you!

I might give this a spin in the next week. It's been a while since I've played a proper MMO (not including the WoW trial) and I don't really want to invest heaps of time into but it might be a nice thing to play periodically, especially with you guys and other VGRians.
You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. -Mary Pickford

Posted this in Facts, but eh

I have a level 80 character boost apparently. Any suggestions for that? My lvl 16 (was higher than I remembered) was a sylvari engineer, but I made one of the shark cat people for this engineer since I had to transfer.

You get it automatically if you have a paid account. I haven't used mine yet and don't really intend to at the moment but you're certainly welcome to join us on an 80 if you don't want to transfer and level again!

I actually really enjoy the leveling experience. I just didn't get too much time with the game's classes beyond getting the engi to 16 and was wondering if you had some perspective on that. I'd ask for a comparison to WoW classes, but it seems fairly different in the way characters are handled so while the Guardian seems to be a paladin and the ranger is a hunter, they probably play relatively differently.

Ah, I get it. Looking more for guidance in terms of what you might want to play. There are some parallels to WoW though the guardian is much less like the paladin than it seems on the surface (unless things have changed significantly from the beta). I guess it's a bit closer to a protection paladin but minus most of the holy magic.

As for the others, elementalists (which I play) are like mages, necromancers are like warlocks, warriors are pretty much the same, thief = rogue, you're spot on with the ranger/hunter comparison, and engineers and mesmers are more or less unique to GW (though the engineer does share some aspects with the engineering profession in WoW). But yeah, actual gameplay is definitely a bit different. Either way though, I hope that helps! For reference, I also enjoy the leveling experience which is why I havne't used mine.

Are professions important in this game? I tried to figure them out on the engi, but I couldn't figure out how to accrue the materials to do basically anything and it felt like I was going to fall behind pretty badly if I didn't do them.

They don't seem to be overly critical at first but it seems they'll play an important role in guild progression and legendary item acquisition. You get most materials through the nodes scattered around (thing mining or herbalism in WoW) - you just need to have an appropriate gathering tool equipped (each is one time use but they're sold in large stacks). You also get materials as drops from enemies and some quests as well and you can buy them from various places too. I think we should probably, as a guild, figure out who's going to do what so we can take advantage of as much as possible.

Alright, I guess I'll wait and see how we divvy that up. I'd prefer not to do leatherworking if that's not a problem. Maybe I was doing something wrong at the time, but it didn't seem like there was a reliable way of getting leather past killing 50 boars and praying for 5 hides. (If memory serves, which it could be wrong since this was a while back, that was what I did.)
