Anyone else find childhood favorites less fun now?
#16
One that leaps to mind is Digimon World 3. Digimon Tamers was on at the time, and I was excited to play with Renamon. But then I remembered it was an idiot plot, with far too many pointless stops between Point A and Point B, and annoyingly long loading times.
"Ideals too easily give way to dogma. Dogma becomes fanaticism. No higher power sits in judgment of us. No supreme being watches to punish us for our sins. In the end, only we ourselves can guard against our obsessions. Only we can decide whether the road we walk carries too high a toll."

I was good hunter when I was in my childhood. I hunt good game meat. Is fun but also tiring.

One could say it is good memories but nowadays hunting is hard. Easier is going to shop and buying meat. Is convenient!
I dislike drinking blood, by the way. I think it (im)pales in comparision to kebabs. Is delicious.

In the back of my head I always thought this would be the case with a lot fo the N64 era games I enjoyed, even back then i what I mean. They may have been colorful games but I could see right through the boxy-clunkiness of the designs, and how water-ed down they had to be to simply get a hold of the new 3D space.

DK64 and Mario64 were the big ones fitting that description. Zelda64 too...but I think as an adult I can appreciate the smaller overworld for simplicity's sake. Smash64 probably was enhanced by the rusty nature of that era. That era really just felt like a "practice" era for future 3D generations

I find my childhood favorites kind of less fun today in general. However, some still hold strong like Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I still fire up that game occasionally and have fun for days on end.

this is actually kinda a good point.
megaman x, in my opinion, actually has really good game design. the intro level lets you screw around while figuring out the game's mechanics, and the Vile fight's conclusion gets you hyped up like "REALLY? I can be as strong as ZERO? he saved me!!!! i can save little bots too!!!" and then it proceeds like a megaman game - except it's got new mechanics (like upgradable parts, dashing and wall kicks) which make it a lot more bearable for first-time players. like...i don't like the original Megaman games that much, but I really like X...1 at least

Also I just beat Goof Troop and I liked it a lot. However I just started Disney's Magical Quest (the first one, with Mickey only) and it's a great game, but...good lord it's a lot harder than I remember it being Blank

Personally, I feel like Donkey Kong Country 2 is a good game with some decent mechanics. But my goodness, is the save method just brutal at times.

The fact that you have to collect coins to save seems a bit silly in hindsight. And that if you get a game-over, you restart at the last save point. I remember one of the worlds having a save point pretty late inside it, so one goof up that results in a game-over means redoing the boss from the last world, and doing a couple levels over again.

There is a fine point between something being challenging and difficult (which this game does fine), and having to restart hours of progress you did because of an arbitrary number system that was a leftover of the arcade era saying "You made a bunch of mistakes. So here's an hour of progress undone".

Personally, I may be sounding like I'm being a wimp from being used to modern mechanics. But I feel like in a modern-day setting where you may not have all the time available to play a game, it's pretty unfair to have to redo tons of lost progress because of saves not being something that you have the freedom to do in this game.

When I played the game, most of it was me just beating a level, collecting 2 coins to save, and redoing that just so I don't lose progress from a game-over.

Oh! And I forgot this game has an enemy that steals lives. And they really like placing them where you don't expect them to be.

Stuff like this makes me happy modern games don't have lives or game-overs, or the fact they let you save whenever you need to.
I like to make models in my free time. I also make weird games, too.

You could always play the GBA version, which doesn't require you to collect coins to save, and I'm pretty sure there's at least 1 hack of the SNES version that updates the save system, but yeah, having you pay to save the game is a really bad design choice.
