Thanks to Smithy for that link that came in very handy...
A trade secret that I might as well tell you since you (and any other MD/Genny rippers) deserve it. I use an emulator called GensKMod which is an edited version of Gens for programming and debugging purposes, one of its features is a sprite viewer (rather similar to an OAM Viewer in Visual Boy Advance) which I use nearly all the time due to many many games have compression. If the sprites aren't there, sometimes I look at the VDP. The only problem is the possiblity of a black background, some games don't use it (like Castlevania) and others like Sonic Spinball heavily rely on it which I use other methods of ripping it.
If BAB, Dazz, Tonberry or Grooveman want to archive this tip, they are free to do so.
