I use an emulator called GensKMod which is an edited version of Gens for programming and debugging purposes, one of its features is a sprite viewer (rather similar to an OAM Viewer in Visual Boy Advance) which I use nearly all the time due to many many games have compression. If the sprites aren't there, sometimes I look at the VDP. The only problem is the possiblity of a black background, some games don't use it (like Castlevania) and others like Sonic Spinball heavily rely on it which I use other methods of ripping it.
If BAB, Dazz, Tonberry or Grooveman want to archive this tip, they are free to do so.
O_O does it work with Shining Force 1/2?
I can't see why not but if it displays a black background on the Sprite Viewer, look at the VDP to see if it has a pallete without a black background. Failing that, the only way (the Spinball way as I call it) is to dump the VDP using DebuGens (because it is broken in GensKMod) and have to open that in a tile ripper tool of your choice [Tile Layer Pro, Tile Molester, YY-CHR that sort of thing]. Luckily Debugens can also dump the TLP pallete files.
Update: I did a quick check on Shining Force 1 and it has no black background on the sprites both ingame and in battle.
