I don't think it's that they're underrated, they're just so unheard of. I mean, people don't argue about whether they were awesome or they sucked. Like the Oracle Series in Legend of Zelda, the Earthbound/Mother was just sort of in the middle and never got much attention.

It did not help at all when the Earthbound commercial was so absolutely god awful >:
