That's what I meant. Nintendo just took another game and replaced the graphics (as well as adding a miniscule feature or two). In essence, they didn't make a Mario game, they borrowed a game and made it Mario.
A true [insert_franchise] game is made to be that game from the start, not to mention being made or endorsed by that franchise.
It doesn't really matter, though.
