I didn't say bad, I said easy. 'Professionals' as you say probably use the style since it's easier to produce a lot of sprites with undemanding size and shading rules. tSR used the style a hell of a lot in previous years (just like they did with Mario & Luigi even earlier), but then everyone moved on, when it became apparent both how undemanding it was, and how despite that, people still managed to ignore the basic style rules.
The contrast in the charcoal looks really samey - but that might be because all his clothing's the same colour; which I concede isn't a contrast flaw. It's pretty boring design, though.
Hmmm... Now that I think of it, many games out there use a style similar to JUS. Zatch Bell, the original GBA One Piece, some of the Naruto RPG games and even the Sonic Advance series could stand beside JUS characters without too much style clashing. It seems mostly a mangaesque style.
