Classic Megaman and Zero are the two top candidates for Megaman characters in ANY situation, EVER... also in that order. 
The reason I like Zero so much is because his was the only Megaman series that had the nuts to actually end. (EXE ended after, I think). Albeit, both those series kinda lived on in spirit through ZX and Starforce, but... the endings to both MMZ3 and 4 are just so climactic.
Also the X series was actually going to be about Zero before they chickened out... ;~;
... I do have an old Zero movelist for Smash lying around. I've got dorky lists of video game ideas that can't ever possibly come to fruition in mainstream media. :<
