actually the best NES games aren't really 'nintendo hard' with the exceptions of the first castlevania (terrible game) contra (it's okay) and ninja gaiden (the second one is better) which are all poorly aged games. the best NES games have a steady difficulty curve (bionic commando, megaman 2, castlevania III)
a lot of people like la-mulana because it rewards uncovering secrets, and deciphering puzzles but in the end the english translation is pretty much basic so it's mostly just trial and error.
