And Bowser kidnapping Peach doesn't make it a Mario game - kinda of a dumb thing to say.
Now that you actually say it you are right, it was a dumb thing to say.
I only said that because it was a common element in the main series and not most of the spin-offs (notably the sports and party games). And now that I think about it there were Mario games even when it didn't have it.
As for the other part, I still don't consider the American SMB2 to be truly canon to the Mario series when I compare it to SMB2J/Lost Levels/next other thing you can call it. Sure it is considered canon to those who might not really be familiar to Lost Levels. Remember that the SMB2 that was released everywhere else around other nations was really just Doki Doki Panic (A lesser known Japanese game that wasn't released here directly because of obvious reasons for those who don't know) with Mario characters and a couple of mushrooms slapped on. (Slight edit: ) When I look at it amongst Lost Levels, Lost levels really does feel like the same game to where SMB2 felt very different.
But even with all of that said, there were some things that made Doki Doki Panic a little bit more noticed when it was made into SMB2. Enemies like Birdo, The Shy Guys and Pokey's ended up migrating into the series. There were some elements of SMB2 that ended up being in later games (Carrying items, Lugi's Differences, ETC.). SMB2 did have some significance in the series world wide. So even if, it'd be somewhat canon to the series, but that's really up to debate through matter of opinion.

It's been confirmed it won't have Wi-fi, far as I remember.
