Secret Rings didn't take place in a european-themed medieval world, Nitro. It took place in an Arabian fairy tale book.

From what I can gather, this is supposed to be a sequel (or a complement to) Secret Rings, a storybook series Sam said.
Though Unleashed was mentioned, I don't see how it would connect.
Also, I think gameplay will be diferent, even experimental, in the storybook series. Secret Rings tried a forward-dashing rails system. Sega saw their successes and took bits of it to make Unleashed. Now Black Knight will probably have another entirely different play style. Sega will probably use the experience from it when making Unleashed's sequel. If my guesses are indeed correct, it is actually a smart move on their part. They only face 2 critical and related problems, Unleashed's success and the fans' feelings about Sonic with a sword.
The bad side is that the plot probably won't be much different from Secret Rings.

EDIT AFTER READING GARY'S LINK:
So they're making it like Unleashed, but 90% Rails with branching pathways.
The plot is almost identical to Secret Rings.
A sword spin when sonic jumps into a ball and stabbing a sword into a wall to slow a descent are both awesome and needed moves.
The idea of a talking sword is mediocre, but better than an invisible Sahra speaking to you).
items are a neat addition that make it more like an rpg.
Skills that don't impact the earlier portion of the game (Sonic going incredibly slow).
Multiple characters that play similarly with twists is good and thankfully optional.
I guess the chao elementals (which remind you it is still a Sonic game) are like power-ups in this game.
I'm pretty indifferent on missions...
The special guage is a good idea (and one that should be in Unleashed's werehog parts).
As was said near the end of the article, it looks like they realized what went wrong with Secret Rings and have made significant improvements.
You know, this could successfully tie together the main franchise and the storybook sequence.
