People are giving you too much credit in trying to get you to look back and figure out why your suggestions are ill-concieved, but I know better and I'm feeling particularly mean, so you get the bold text.
What you suggested are not COSTUMES, but CHARACTERS, and in some cases your choices MAKE NO SENSE.
I'll relay what I think of some of my favorites.
Bowser =/= a Mini Kraid
Toon Link =/= Vaati (hellllllllllllll nooooooooooo)
Lucario =/= Frosslass? ... Raise your hand if you don't know what a Frosslass even is.
MetaKnight =/= DarkMatterKnight
Ike =/= Isaac
KOS-MOS =/////= Klonoa? (HOW?)
Sir, what you are suggesting are character clones rather than costumes. You'd have to change their graphics entirely, give them new voices, and it'd make no sense for the announcer to go "GENO WINS!" when you were somehow, don't ask me how, playing as Dimentio.
... Now, to those of you who don't have your heads in the clouds, what I'd stand by is this:
-Don't make costumes mandatory for characters, but don't completely rule them out (or in) until after you complete a sheet for a character.
-Perhaps limit it to one costume for a character, for those that get one that is. Lots would be great, but would it be reasonable?
-Only use a costume if it is considered iconic enough. Doesn't have to be OLD or CLASSIC, but something that leaves a big impression. An example of a costume that is rather classic is Dr Mario for Mario, while one that is impressionable while being rather recent would be Dry Bowser. (Seriously, I flipped out when I first saw him )
-Last minute example of a character who almost cannot have an official costume change: Geno. He's only had one official game appearance to my knowledge, and he pretty much kept that appearance the whole game.
