The idea that boys first erotic thoughts are directed at their mother is a Freudian idea.

Freud was raised by a nanny and did not see much of his mother until his 20s.

So that rather explains itself.

Of course when you're young (I mean really young, a little kid) then there's some curiosity about sex and the differences between genders. With kids it's less "I would totally pork my parent" and more "I don't understand why my parent is different".
