If we're going to add a Sonic item, I think a Shield Monitor would be great.
Once the monitor appears, whoever attacks it first gets a Sonic-style shield from it. Most of the time, you'll get the regular shield (from Sonic 1 and 2), which I was thinking of making absorb a single hit for you, but in a game like Smash Bros. that probably wouldn't be too useful. Instead, it absorbs a set amount of damage for you. If it takes, say, 60% damage, then it'll go away if you take that much from any amount of attacks. If the attack that destroys the shield does more than what the shield could absorb, you take the rest of the damage and knockback.
Sometimes (somewhat rare) when breaking the monitor, you'll get one of the Bubble, Lightning, and Fire Shields from Sonic 3. These function the same as the normal shield, but also give you the benefits of a new normal air attack. The Fire Shield gives you a quick dash, the Bubble Shield is basically Yoshi's Ground Pound with less delay (and without the bounceback the shield had in Sonic 3), and the Lightning Shield is the equivalent of the Screw Attack.
