We won't modify the icons. It would take about 5 months of work to change every icon.

I don't know. You always could ask the submiters to start using that smaller format from now on, and ask for voluntary help among this community to edit the old icons into the new format. Then you could ask the staff to replace the old icons from the sprite archive pages a section a time and in a month or less the job should be finished. (Much easier than taking the entire work all by the staff only)

The pages could load faster and the bandwith consumption would be lessened that way.
