I've always seen Metroid (and most nintendo properties) as nothing but wasted opportunities, Metroid could be an amazing, grandiose space opera of epic proportions. Instead, it is widely games spent in isolation from one of the most interesting universe' in videogames.
While many people love games to have an epic story like that, the large group of people that like games played in isolation the entire time would be displeased. And rightfully so considering the Metroid series has been like that since the beginning.
Its like what's been done with Sonic in a way. Many people began to dislike the series when Sega tried to take it in new directions and added in voice acting and put it in 3d for example.
I think it will probably be a good game either way, but from what I've seen fans of classic Metroid gameplay and storytelling will probably be disappointed.
