Red disbands them in Gen 1, then three years later they get back together in Johto, only to have Gold disband them permanently.
No, we're going by what's going on in the game.
Gen 2 happens 3 years after Gen 1 does, in the pokemon timeline.
Gen 4 is speculated to happen during or just after Gen 2.
There is no indication of when Gen 3 takes place. I'd assume it's after Gens 2 and 4, though.
