I think, personally, it started with Heroes, where you have to switch every 5 seconds to another member to fly over a hole or something. Its actually alot better to play with one character, and I think if they designed the game so you only play as Sonic on some levels(like in SA2B), it wouldve been alot better.
Shadow the Hedgehog also continued the decline, with the gun, emoness and adding more characters. Actually, all the new Sonic games recently have been adding in pointless characters that destroy the cast. If they kept 7 characters they wouldve been okay. Lets say:
1)Sonic
2)Tails
3)Knuckles
4)Dr. Robotnik/Dr.Eggman
5)Amy
6)Metal Sonic
7)Shadow(but keep him mysterious and dark, his initial appearance in SA2B)
They dont need the spin-off junk either. Why would he get on a air-board if he can run fast in the first place? Or swords if he can spindash into his enemies? SEGA needs to make platforming games, not RPGS. I like the Original Sonic games, the Sonic Advance series, and the Sonic Adventure series. Not everything else.
might I say that Mario has been doing almost nothing but spinoff games?
unless you know that aswell, Sonic can make spinoff games aswell
