The DS is actually insanely popular in the handheld market. The presence of its gimmick is obvious, but the entire spectrum of gamers (aside from Sony fanboys) is loving it.
I think Microsoft will have to drop out of the gaming market eventually. Nintendo (and to a small extent, Sony) has a huge leap ahead of anybody else as far as motion control is concerned. Sony has already made the jump to HD and its library will steadily grow.
In roughly 5-10 years, Wii's succesor (or through several upgrades to the original Wii) will probably be coming out with enchanced motion controls (or maybe even the use of the Z Cam), 360 will be showing its age so Microsoft will need to create an HD console, and Sony's system will still be current and powerful.
