Well, when comparing to Contra, I was referring to how, when faced with combat situations, you essentially just run around and shoot things blindly. I can't really say you don't do that in Metroid games, but I did notice that Metroid games tend to have a bit more focus on standing still and shooting, as well as a bit of shot conservation. Also, in Metroid games, there's usually a bit more emphasis on aiming, rather than on just the shooting. Of course, that'd be nearly impossible in this 3d environment, so, yeah...
... Actually, I dunno, really. I think it's just the general feel. Also, the level design is what really made me think of Ninja Gaiden. But, I can't really say much about that either, seeing I only made it through the first level, and that was a long time ago...
