i didn't say there is no storyline, i said it is at most used to give some sort of continuity between s2 and s3, but it doesnt change the fact there is no story in the game itself(all the plot is written and told outside the game).
ignoring this storyline/cannon whatsoever doesnt affect in the least minimun bit how the game is played, not you will lose an important aspect of it. the games itself have no plot besides getting to the end of the level and defeat eggman(and get the emeralds in the process). as crude as it sounds, its just a nice "touch" but it is completely optional. as if SMB3 started with mario waking up from a dream. but it doesnt, and it doesnt change in the least bit the whole game.
as i see it, Sonic 4 could easily retell the whole "story", introducing all the characters in each episode all over again. act surprised when Tails is announced in S4:2
