Serious discussion of Current Consoles (PS3, X360, Wii)

Metroid Prime 3 (which has good controls - the NGC controls sucked - why wasn't there an option to use the standard FPS controls?) is one of the few good games. I seriously don't know why the Wii is doing so well except that it's got a huge marketing campaign and people buy gimmicky crap (look how much WiiFit sold...) No More Heroes, Mario Kart, Brawl and Metroid 3 are really all that interest me on it. Sure those games are good and Brawl and Karts are some of the best multi-player games you can play with friends sitting at home but the sales figures don't match what is actually on offer if you ask me.

You realize that Nintendo early on said "screw you competition, I'm going after a different market." And you're surprised that they're getting low tier gamers left right and sideways? Microsoft and Sony pander to high-middle to upper tiers with their games. After all, how many new gamers does it generate?

Nintendo's kicking the ass out of the other two groups in terms of getting new people to play video games. This creates a bit of what you call a tier-explosion. That shovelware you talk about is actually easy-to-learn, easy-to-play game tiers that the others have long since forgotten, albeit a few minor games here and there. So Nintendo gets new gamers, the other consoles look at the sales and drool, and follow suit. Nintendo, meanwhile, moves up the tiers of complexity to guide their new members into the higher tiers and turn them into solid gamers, which is good for the market.

No, I'm not claiming Nintendo's a god or anything, I'm just saying their business model is fantastic for sales. Cheapest console, readily available games and easy to pick up and play, with in-house games of good quality. Can't ask much more for people to get newbies involved. So Nintendo's sales are driven by newbies and fans, and yanno what? That's what keeps them securely in the black.
