Yeah, Raiden was awesome for slow virtualoids, because he could nuke the speedy guys from far away. I prefer Viper 2 and Temjin, because of their secret attacks (that the computer is rarely able to dodge). I use Fei Yen or Apharmd when somebody else was using Temjin or Viper 2.
I must commend both the original and Oratorio Tangram (the only 2 I won) for their high level of difficulty.
