as in, make them not generic, or give them memorable traits
example: ryu's actual design itself is about as generic as it gets, but ryu himself has personality enough to make up for it (albeit; his personality is slightly cliche)
and i'm pretty sure there are some "dead" fatal fury characters that were revived and made less generic when they were ported to later KOF games, which counts as an upgrade to me as well
they could easily do the same thing with KI-- hopefully they won't jump the shark like MK brutally did, because KI's combo system has always been really fun and solid, whereas MK killed theirs when they tried to make their game more realistic and serious
