But back with what you said about advertising. You gotta remember Pokemon IS a product. And sales depend on appeal to the audience. Bigger audience = bigger sales. Not everyone is a hardcore gamer. People are dumb. They want something they can look at and feel comfortable with.

AKA: pokemon designs dont need to be simple, and if they did it would only need to be the starters
also this argument about which pokemon have better designs, the simple ones form the first two gens with not as much thought to them or the ones from 3rd and 4th and 5th that have better, more imaginitive, intricate deisgns
