Actually, one of the things I noticed is that the physics on Mario especially aren't 100%. Turning after running and jumping immediately after landing both have some lag that contributed to quite a few deaths for me. It's weird that you don't really notice how a Mario platformer "feels" until it's tweaked just a little.
