Pillow Shading is when you go outlining the darkest shade to the brightest, which is generally: Shading just for shading.
Shades are used to show curvature in a sprite. Use shading to show bumps/Shapes that are on the object, or else it means that object is flat. Add highlights to also give a sense of shape on a sprite. Limit yourself to colors more, you used an unnecessary 2 shades of brown. Goomba's usually have uni-brows and bigger eyes than that, but that might just be you giving him a scared expression. Use A.A.: Anti-Aliasing is when you use darker shades around the edges of the object to give it a sense of smoothness. A.A. doesn't neccessarilly have to be on the outside of a sprite, in fact, its recommended to be used more on the inside.Color contrast is how darker or lighter a shade is compared to another. It makes shading much more noticeable, which also leads to making your light-source more noticeable.

This is an edit of your sprite with all the fixes stated above, do not use it. Its just an example to help give you a better image:
