I personally liked the "crawling out of the pipe," or the "jumping out of the pipe and tripping, falling on his head (or something)."
While the door (either one) may be more defining for Luigi, he's recognized more as the other brother in Super Mario Bros., rather than as "the guy with the ghost-infested mansion."
EDIT: Iceman ninja. Anyway, I really don't have any problem with the door. As far as the audience goes, I think we're kinda going for a similar target audience to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was made up of a lot of gamers, but also some younger gamers and a small number of casuals. Though with a bit more emphasis on the gamers.
