Yeah, you're right. The thickness is giving it the illusion of looking shorter.
I like Air's sword, but it's still a bit too jagged. It's hard to get a smooth effect on something so small with pixels, though. Maybe in that case no outline would be best?
The problem with no outline is how it'll blend with lighter backgrounds.. I do think it needs some sort of outline. Maybe not completely black?
Actually, I'll just try playing around with that sword... BRB!

OK, so, the black outline won't work for me. I just can't make it look any smoother than what's been given. Instead, I tried to implement a lighter grey outline. I got the first sprite's sword, changed it quite a bit, and threw it on aura's overall sprite:
And that's what came out. Yay or nay?
