2-D, the only problem I see right now with the sprite is that the botton of his head still looks like an upside-down egg. Try to give him a jawbone and give him a wider mouth

ignore the other side bars, and look at this head. It's not the best example, however it does show that just-out at the botton of the head near the jawbone, while your sprite seems to leave that part out and it suddenly gets smaller as it nears the neck.
