It's perfectly fine for the game to be widescreen if the width of the game doesn't exceed 1024 pixels. Anything past that may break the "standard" and the game may become difficult for others to play.

Especially if it's only in the 800 ranges-- 800x600 is so far beyond outdated nowadays that you can't possibly be using it unless you're still running Windows 98.
