oh god here comes a serious post
oh no
in the west it'd turn into a blaxploitation game
(actually I'd like this
a blaxploitation RPG would own REALLY FUCKING HARD but the general population has to accept it and not be a bunch of pussies)
or
Like, for example, let's say - very dumb example but let's say market forecasts say that the next turn in gaming is core gaming experiences that appeal exclusively to a minority (black, or Hispanic). You're probably going to have development studios take an idea and go way too far with it and end up boarheadedly stereotype everything just so it appeals to "black people" - anyone else playing the game is probably going to think it's the shittiest game ever that's cashing in with racist undertones because all the jokes that appeal to the black market would pretty much...you know, cover things within a specific black subculture that don't necessarily apply to the entire black population.
Stereotyping is born and lawsuits follow.
Not only that its release would kind of...end up ostracizing the community.
It'd pretty much be Soul Plane in comparison to Airplane!: Airplane! was probably one of the best comedies of all time, but when execs want a movie to be made purely to be "the black version of Airplane!" it ends up being really campy, dumb and really paints a minority in a poor light because it says "hey this movies made for black people, this is what all black people like and think is funny"
Now imagine they touted a game with the appeal of "It's the Hispanic version of Final Fantasy!"
if you were hispanic you'd be pretty fucking pissed, and I don't even have to explain why
now, taking this to an eastern perspective:
In a JRPG it just doesn't ...making a black main protagonist isn't Japanese
at all
Usually despite their Caucasian look almost all characters from JRPGs and anime are actually Japanese; esp. in behavior and mannerisms so it's easier for the player to identify with that character
For protagonists in JRPGs to be black let alone American the Japanese demographic would have difficulty identifying with the cast (Real gamers wouldn't care of course but, sales figures would really blow)
Black people in JRPGs are usually there for the sake of the "exoticism" and not much else. Given most character design, even if they made the character black but with the same amount of love put into the character design, corporate would probably say "why can't we make the protagonist asian, to appeal to our demographic better?" ):
I mean I'd play it, but that isn't saying a lot for Japanese sales which is what drives the production of most games nowadays (no one makes a game because someone says it's a "fuckin' cool idea" - the market and demographic has to reflect that. I like how I couldn't figure that out when I was 8 and wanted Nintendo to make like 30 million games from my cool ideas, but now I can pretty plainly see that)
