Team Sonic was Normal Mode (Got up to Frog Forest), and Chaotix had non-standard missions (Got up to Hang Castle), in a way making stages swing wildly in difficulty between insultingly easy and balls-bustingly hard.

The storyline (or at least stage order) is the same for all stories.
