Also, my initial idea was shiny, but I couldn't make it look like anything other than just bands of various grays without dithering or using ten million colors.

It'd look less shiny if the reflection was more indestinct. Using a more subtle shading/colouring change, and not having the 'edges' of the ray reflection as prominent would do this. Basically; where shiny surfaces reflect, matte surfaces diffuse. The point of the obelisk is leaning a bit too far to the right.
