No you don't ever /mean/ for the sprites to clash in style. It never has been and never will be a good idea. Look at published, proper games that are about crossovers (Marvel Vs. Capcom, Super Smash Bros.). They go to great lengths to make all participants in the game use the same art style, even if they come from varied backgrounds of seriousness or anatomical accuracy.
Just pasting sprites from entirely different games is both lazy and looks ugly; end of.
