Background
Sega were originally making a 2D Sonic for the iPhone, they decided to rename it Sonic 4 and upscale it to the consoles.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says that all the negative perceptions of recent Sonic games are the fans fault because 2D fans want 2D games, and 3D fans want 3D games, and are nothing to do with their quality. So we have this release for the 2D fans that'll hopefully shut us up. Did I mention that Sega think The only Sonic game in nineteen years to miss the mark is the classic "Sonic Chaos", so at least they have something they want to improve on.
Gameplay
-Featuring vastly inferior graphics, sound and music to the fifteen-year-old Sonic and Knuckles.
-With level design that intentionally punishes you for not spamming the homing attack.
-Sonic the Hedgehog 4 builds on the previous game by providing, um, four levels, all of which are thematic carbon copies of Sonic 1 and 2's zones.
-The physics are so inept and baffling that if Nintendo were making this, Miyamoto himself would have Chabudai Gaeshi'd the project.
-If you buy the iPhone version, Sega will reward you with this exclusive level:

Four levels = Fifteen dollars.
Any news on Episode 2?
Sega have confirmed that the only part of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 they have completed is writing its story, which might give you an idea of their priorities.
