Personally, I'm happy to see the Kremlings getting a break for newer villains. Even though K. Rool always changes things up between his appearances, repeating the same villain over and over can get STALE. For me, Bowser would have gotten really stale if it wasn't for side Mario games like his Gameboy and RPG games where Bowser wasn't the main villain all the time. Whenever he comes back as the main focus, I can still tolerate it.
One example of a villain who got INCREDIBLY stale to the point of them not even trying anymore is Sigma from the Megaman X series. By X6, he LITERALLY just showed up in a cutscene in the second-to-last level after the villain of the game went "Oh by the way, I resurrected Sigma inexplicably, I hope you understand". To top that all off, instead of being epic and badass, Sigma looked drunk off his ass.
