I liked the cutscene from Final Fantasy IX where they were being chased by Black Waltz No. 3.
The Jumi are people who have "cores" that are precious stones in their chests, and they are hunted by jewel thieves (although only one thief is ever-present, others are kind of implied). By the last segment of the story there are only three left, two of whom you can pick one of to accompany you in the final level of this story. The last level is filled with ghost memories of the particular Jumi you actually got to meet and who died through the story, and the whole level has this depressing piano with violin accompaniment. To top that all off, when you get to the top it turns out the Jewel Thief killed the character you didn't take with you, and after the big battle your character starts to cry, and then they turn to stone because of a curse related for crying for the Jumi.
Of course it's all kind of offset by the fact that the Jewel Thief works for a Giant-Space-Flea-From-Nowhere who has literally 2 lines of dialogue and has NO character entry in the character log (while even the most useless, non-talking NPCs even have a small page), and to top that all off there's a Carebears ending where crying for the Jumi brings them all back to life and then they cry for the main character to bring him back to life.
