Generally, when I think of making a sprite a certain color, I avoid using that exact color (especially in the cases of black and white).
Take for instance, you want to make this hair black. The problem arises when you need another color to contrast with black in order to make it look nice and readable, as you can't find another color that will provide a balanced medium of black.
I did a quick edit to show you what I mean:
I changed the black to a very subtly dark shade of red, and made the grey a blue tint in order to balance back to black through the contrast.
