the beetle could be fire/bug, now that i think about it.
make it some firebug and give it a reason to "light" its own fuse when desperate?
maybe a pkmn power similar to sandstorm, except fire? idk pkmn terms.
the idea is to make it a common encounter in grassy areas and a threat to weak pokemon (if you can't ko it before it explodes)

i'm not so sure on the rock-paper-scissors idea. mainly because it's the underlying structure of the game already. partly because weren't the legendaries always based on mythological creatures? (roc, thunderbird, phoenix for example)

besides, we already have at least five legendary birds.
legendary birds, dogs, golems...
maybe three legendary fighting pokemon?

i'm liking the grass and water starters. especially the water, it's really interesting enough to make me want to choose it.
the fire starter just reminds me of flaafy.

i also like the idea of a nautilus pokemon. we could always give it features to make it distinct from omastar.
in fact i sketched some concepts for a nautilus and a panda pokemon. i'll post them when i'm done with school work.
