Not surprised to hear this from a pixelart community.
Seriously SMW had shit sprites.
SMW seriously had its share of very simplistic, and in some small cases, plain low-quality pixel-art, but it was sort of excusable since it was their first time doing 16-bit. Early Mega Drive/Sega Genesis titles that weren't directly ported from the arcades, like Alex Kidd for instance, also suffered that, to a much worse degree.
DKC looked better, but while the rendered sprites did make it look somewhat more detailed and "realistic", it also made it look less realistic. Since they're rendered individual sprites, the sprites clash a lot in perspective, lightsource, etc, ironically losing a lot of the 3D illusion that the renders were supposed to give. The most notable error is in perspective, which is specially notable in small platforms.
Too bad Yoshi's Island is not there to be voted :I
Let's also remember that this voting is not about just only the quality of the graphics, but all of the art direction of the game: Music, atmosphere, etc. It's important when to vote to remember how the game handled its atmosphere. It may have shitty music or even not very good graphics technically, but the game might have had an unique style to it or other artistic merits that the game delivered really well.
Or maybe don't remember. I'm not sure whether I should be taking this voting seriously the more I think about it :I
