people are pretty lame if they gave you a model without materials.
so either there are materials, and you need to turn on the texture in the viewer port.. "OR" you actually are missing materials, and need to re-assign
first off try opening the models in something like MilkShape.. its incredible user friendly. once the models loaded right click in the viewer port, and goto View Textures..
if its still a straight shade.. then guess that means no materials.
in max to assign new materials, just drag and drop a texture from your folder.
any more advice on applying new materials to a material-less model, is something I would consider advanced. and would suggest you seek a course on using 3dsmax.
