That can be dangerous since you could fall into lava
It's best to dig diagonally when you want to move downwards- not as fast, but you're less likely to come across any nasty surprises
No I tend to aim for lava, because then I have a rad deathtrap~
When I dig straight down, I don't keep valuables on me. And I do it in a 2x2 block, where I dig out each of the four corners three blocks downward, and apply ladders as needed. So it's essentially Colton's strategy.
If I hit lava, then I go back in, dig out a cave above the lava, and then I have a deathtrap for people who aren't aware of how to properly get down. If not, then I steal some buckets, find a lava source, and then fill up my pit's bottom with lava. Then I set up base, dig around, find some nice ores, and call it home. And people don't like jacking from my base since it's hard to get into (depending on the pattern of ladders I set up).
But yeah, this is only done with wood picks and wood shovels. I'd never bring down anything I don't want to lose :>
