Keep tiers. Introduce points. Keep eliminations: make eliminations a matter of falling below a certain quota of points (points will carry over per round). have the quota designed so that people can only get knocked out by the second or third round, assuming they have lost all rounds up until that point. points won't be about determining winner, points will be about determining who can stay in the running; once eliminations hit, wittle it down until its the classic LAST PERSON LEFT VERSUS LAST PERSON LEFT. there's something romantic about that. maybe once eliminations hit, start raising the quota of points each round as well.
I don't want, say, Jetters going up against elk or neorice first round, because it'll be effort misapplied (and we know how fucking lazy spriters are): elk or neorice probably won't put their all into the entry, and jetters' effort is either going to try too hard to go beyond their skill level and screw up, or simply not try because it won't be worth it.
Don't have a losers bracket. that's insulting and defeats the point of trying to go anywhere.
if properly introduced this method will keep the more balanced approach to groove's method while also keeping the competitive aspect and mostly addressing the flaw that 1up pointed out.
