You have a point with most of what you said, I think you can explain it better than I can. Although I have to disagree with you on the Steam thing. Emulation is a wonderful thing.
I may get it at some point though anyway purely for the added features if they add enough interesting stuff to it.

You forget that the game has a CD quality soundtrack, sound effects and a few FMV's that take up a lot of space. I know that the Gems collection version of the ISO is about 430 MB or so though I don't know how much of it is compressed and how much is just art since each level has a separate set of sprite tiles. I'm sure they could cut down the size by making a MIDIish version of the original soundtrack, but that kinda defeats the point of porting the game.
