Let me hit you with one of my old favorites:
Inhumanoids, which was pretty much GI Joe meets Metroid, with giant monsters from a vast underground world being fought by human people in awesome robotic armor (at least that's how I would have described it when I was a kid). It was surprisingly ballsy and had a lot of scary moments, and despite the fact they made a lot of effort to show that almost every character always survived when a helicopter was blown up or when their vehicle was tossed through the air, it was pretty violent overall. One of the scariest parts was the story of the character Dr. Mangler, who dies corroding in toxic waste during a prison outbreak, but the other main human villain Blackthorne (whose name has the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the head) has crazy visions after retrieving his remains and brings him back to life thanks to D'Compose, the Inhumanoid who can transform any human into a disgusting undead monster with a single nick on their skin.
Here are the first parts of both episodes containing that story. Also has the Soviet Union trying to flood the planet's core! What more could you want?
